Kettlebaston - facts and figures

These are  the 1881 entries at Kettlebaston-1881.htm and I am pleased to say the 1841 census should be with us in the next couple of days, and a whole lot more too.

Well, the Suffolk 1841 census has arrived on my doorstep. Kettlebaston is the first step - only 201 people. This should be a doddle,  with all the excellent resources already on the internet, especially Ray Longs' Cosford database. More on that to follow.

The Kettlebaston 1841 census - This is in a very simplistic form at the moment - lots more detail to add. Many thanks to Ray Long and his plethora of information, at Cosford database in Kettlebaston

Also, I have finished transcribing Hitcham, as best as I can read it. It has lots of errors, so use the Cosford database to verify anything / everything! It is just aimed as an alternative view of the data - but untrustworthy. There are over a 1000 people though, so worth a look. More work on this tomorrow! Hitcham 1841 Census - which needs thorough checking!!!

Interestingly, my grandfather - Robert Wilding, who married Ethel Littlechild (the daughter of quite a wealthy farmer before the 1873 depression)  had parents William Wilding and Mary Ann Cole (married in Raydon  about 1875). The entry for the census of 1891 shows William as being born in Kettlebaston.

Here is a legacy created tree of the family in November 2003 Check it out - lots of Suffolk added!

Ray Long suggests that William was the son of Robert Wilden and Caroline Death (married 17 Nov 1850 in Kettlebaston). His site shows Robert as being born in Hitcham, so does the 1851 indexes. Whilst Caroline is one of three daughters of Joshua Rosier Death and Elizabeth Taylor /Death. This Elizabeth married three times, linking nearly all the Kettlebaston families!

The first interesting point of the 1841 census is there is no Robert Wilden to be found - not yet anyway. Although on Rays' Hitcham site at http://fp.raylong.plus.com/hitcham , we have:

Robert CARLO \ WILDEN was born about 1829 in Hitcham, Suffolk, England. In 1881 he was an Agricultural Labourer in Martlesham, Suffolk, England.

Spouse: . Robert CARLO \ WILDEN and Caroline DEATH were married on 17 Nov 1850 in Kettlebaston, Suffolk, England. Children were: William WILDEN, John Robert WILDEN, Frederick WILDEN, George WILDEN, Edward WILDEN, Ernest WILDEN, James WILDEN

So, we need to find Roberts' mother - maiden name Carlo and a Wilden. Thanks Ray.

I think it is time to transcribe Hitcham - too.

Secondly, there is a Harriet Death , aged 12, and Caroline Death aged 7, living with a family called Stonham, in Kettlebaston, in 1841. Is the mother Elizabeth, their mother? Yes, it appears she is !

Thiirdly, I know Cole is a common name, but there is a family of Coles in Kettlebaston with mother and daughter called Mary Anne, are these the ancestors of Mary Anne Cole who marries William in Raydon. Lots more questions, and facts to follow, once I decide how to display the results. Here are some more Cole families in the Raydon 1841 Census

Anyway, getting back to the Wilden family. Robert Carlo was born as Robert Wilden, son of Mary Wilden.

The three Death sisters (CAroline, Charlotte and Harriet)  all marry Wildens. Are they related. Yes, two are brothers - so how does Robert relate ?

Well, from the 1841 census, Mary Wilden (now Carlo) is shown as aged 51 - yes, I double checked this a few times. Yet Robert Carlo is only 33 years of age. So, if we used this figure of 51, it would make Mary born about 1790. This is so unbelievable, I think this is correct.

Then go back to Ray Longs Cosford database, and we find

William WILDING was born in 1766 in Lavenham, Suffolk, England. He was baptised on 12 Jul 1766 in Lavenham, Suffolk, England. He died in 1839 in Kettlebaston, Suffolk, England. He was buried on 24 Feb 1839 in Kettlebaston, Suffolk, England. He is entered on the burial record aged 74. Parents: Richard WILDING and Elizabeth SYMOCKS.

He was married to Jane GAME on 24 Sep 1787 in Hitcham, Suffolk, England. Children were: Mary WILDING, Elizabeth WILDING, John WILDING, Thomas WILDING \ WILDEN, William WILDING, Hannah WILDING, Harriet WILDEN.

Mary was born 1791. Her brother William had sons Thomas and Henry married to the other two Death sisters. YES! She also had several other children (Sarah , James and Lydia ) before Robert, and subsequently a few Carlo children. So now we have two brothers and a first cousin.

Here is extra confirmation (Thanks Ray):

Mary Wilden baptised in 1791 at Kettlebaston is the Mary who married Robert Carlo in 1829.
She had 3 illegitimate children before she married Robert.

This makes Robert abt 19 when he married Mary who would have been 38.
This would tie in with there only being 3 children from this marriage the last being born in 1835 when Mary would have been 45.

I have not seen the 1841 Census for Kettlebaston but on this Census the ages are rounded up to the nearest 5 years in many cases.

The 1851 Census Lists her age as 52.  This is taken from the SFHS 1851 Census index which means there could have been a transcription error.  You would have to check the original Census to double check.  It also looks like Mary was living with her son Robert in 1851

We know that by 1861 Robert (the son) and Caroline and his wife were living in Hadleigh when their son George was born in 1861.

BINGO!!!

I have just found the burial of Mary Carlo 9 Feb 1860 at Hadleigh age 70 so therefore born abt 1790.

I think this confirms she was the Mary baptised 11 Sep 1791 at Kettlebaston.
